Amazing Home Improvement!

Jules gave me the idea to work on the wood ...

So Dave got a little can of Ipswitch stain at Home Depot today when he was getting parts to fix the leak in the garage sink. Ipswitch is the name of the stain the builder used 14 years ago on all the pine doors, door jams, and floor boards when they built our house.

OH MY GOSH!!!

Using the stain on the woodwork was so effective, I feel like we just moved into a BRAND NEW home :~)

Since everything is pine wood that is very soft, every tap on it caused damage, and in this house with two dogs and five guys, there were a lot more than just taps that happened! There were so many bangs, scratches, holes, dings, and other abuse to the wood that it was terrible in some places (especially where a dog got trapped behind a closed door) ... And old looking in the rest (that would be every other door and door jam in the entire house) ...

The basement door before and after the stain:

Here's my office door before and after:

I dipped an old washrag in the stain, wore rubber gloves, and added elbow grease. I completed the entire upstairs, and two doors on the main floor - I've been working about 3 hours. My wrist is sore and will probably be more so in the morning, but the improvement was so awesome that it was very, very, very hard to stop.

While I did that, Dave adjusted the doors that had started to close themselves lately (probably due to house settling due to drought). I read the "fix" using an internet search and he implemented it... he took out one pin from each hinge, took it to the front concrete porch, hammered it in the middle to give a slight bend, and reinserted the hinge. The bend causes enough resistance to the gravity of the tilt that the doors now stay open again ~ waa laa!

I'm a tired and happy camper ~ and it is time to go to bed :~)
