On Wednesday, Steve was taken to the local hospital by Maurice and Brother Wong. The “hospital” was a small room, cement floor, unpainted plywood walls, a wicker chair, another old chair, and a small desk. Missing from sight were any signs of cleanliness or medical supplies. His visit was less than 20 minutes as they saw him right away. The doctor confirmed the tissue infection and told him to stay on antibiotics and off his feet. Brother Wong (a pastor at a local church) insisted on paying for the whole bill ~ it came to 9 RMB ~ the equivalent of $1.12.
While this was happening, we were awaiting to board our bus back to the hotel for our mid-day break ~~ I purchased 15 ice cream bars for people on our team from a local vendor across from the school. At 1 RMB per ice cream, the cost was 15 RMB or $1.90... for 15 ice cream bars...
Amazing!
