A 20-minute audio-video call from Ryan ...

Ryan just called me from Ben's skype account. They now have wireless internet service in their room at Seva Kendra. Skype allows communication via the internet from computer-to-computer for free.

With their camera I was able to see Ryan and Ben's room - they have their own beds with mosquito nets and their own bathroom. They are provided with breakfast and dinner of rice and curry. Ryan says they usually get some chicken as well and today they had mango. He won't eat the okra and eggplant that are provided as vegetables and says he doesn't eat veggies at home so not to worry ;)

Ryan says that they are being stretched physically -- the heat, the sweating. It's 20 minute walk to the train then a crowded train ride to the school with a reversal in the evening. They teach a morning class and an afternoon class to youngsters and it's hard work. The slums are dirtier and more crowded than in Kenya. The air is more polluted. The crowds are thicker. Spiritually he said that to minister in India you really need to know your stuff because getting into heaven for the muslims and hindis requires them to know everything about their faith. He shared with me about a prayer meeting they attended this evening and the worship was in bengali and Ben gave the sermon in english. Then lots of prayer - Ry said it was awesome. Ramesh and Raja serve as their translators and one of them is usually with them.

Ryan said that the four of them love calcutta and they are never leaving. I asked whether "never" was with a big "N" or a little "n" and he assured me (with a bit of sly grin as he paused) that they are coming home as planned at the end of the summer :)

Ben grabbed a short shower while Ryan and I chatted and they were hitting the bed for the night. I was able to pray with Ryan for the team before we hung up. Now, I need to figure out how to get my camera working so that they can see us at home as well. I sure do like this extra communication verses the silence from Kenya during his two-month trip last summer!

Addressing Valentines ...

It's hard to believe that after soooo many years,
we are getting toward the end of our Valentine Addressing!
Here are pictures of one of the last nights of these multi-year ritual,
as we share candy, sweets, and love love love with our schoolmates...

Reflections ... our small group

For the 2007-08 year of our Wednesday ladies bible study, we were blessed with the most awesome small group! These ladies came together, many as strangers at the beginning of the year, to form a sweet bond of love that exalted Christ. We raised each other and our families up in prayer through the year and joined together in praises for so many answered prayers. It was a blessed year of growth in the Lord. We praise Him for His great works!

Happy Father's Day ...

Father's Day ...
undoubtedly a very conflicted day in my mind and heart.

I'm glad I can focus my time & energy & space & heart
on the wonderful father of my children,
'cuz it let's me skip pondering many gaps & pains of my youth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are the wonderful verses that were shared in church
regarding "A Heavenly Father's Day"
The last words of the Old Testament - the hearts of fathers & children ...
Malachi 4:5-6 ~ See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.
The start of God's people - the father will direct his children ...
Genesis 18:18-19 ~ Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.
The marriage covenant - it's value is to the children ...
Malachi 2:14-15 ~ You ask, "Why?" It is because the LORD is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. Has not the LORD made the two of you one? You belong to him in body and spirit. And why has he made you one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.
The teachings of God - parents are to disciple their children ...
Deuteronomy 6:1-2 ~ These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.
Praising and loving our children - Our Father modeled it with Jesus ...
Luke 3:22 ~ And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
Blessing our children - we can pray over our children daily ...
Numbers 6:24-26 ~ The LORD bless you and guard you; the LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn His face toward you and give you peace.
Raising them tenderly - how we are to raise our children ...
Ephesians 6:4 ~ Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to resentment], but rear them [tenderly] in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord.
Obey your parents & honor your mother & father - we've called to both obedience and respect ...
Ephesians 6:1-2 ~ Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise—so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."
RE: Your Letters of May 16 and June 2, 2008
Dear Mr. Technician:
Thank you for your letters of May 16 and June 2, 2008 and attached covenant, Gardens – Flower which has a highlighted sentence which reads, “Plant material must be live, not plastic or silk.” Your letter notes “Specific non-compliance pertains to failure to remove artificial flowers from front yard planter box” and that “if it is not cured by 06/16/2008 a formal complaint will be filed with the Board of Directors.”
We would like to request a hearing before the Board of Directors to appeal this letter as well as to request consideration for changing this provision of our community covenants. Our request reflects our beliefs as follows:
(1) If chosen properly, plastic or silk flowers can add to the beautification of our neighborhoods;
(2) Live flowers have been devastated in recent years due to the teeming population of wild rabbits in our neighborhood;
(3) The extended drought in our region should bring a heightened sensitivity to water savings opportunities.
Please note that if we have “chosen poorly” and our silk flowers are considered ugly or gaudy and thus are not adding to the quality of the life experienced in our community, we of course are happy to choose differently. We do understand that some silk flowers can be overstated. Please see pictures of our property and flower box attached.
Please let us know when we would have the opportunity to appear before the Board. Also, we would like to take a moment to thank you and your colleagues for all you do to help ensure that our neighborhoods remain beautiful for the benefit of our community.
Sincerely,
Dave & Sherrie
